The purpose of this fund is to provide one or more scholarships in the amount of $1000.00 to be awarded each year to an undergraduate student or a first-year graduate student attending any Montana College or University.
- Basic Requirements. The selection of the scholarship recipient shall be based on the following criteria:
- Recipient must be an undergraduate student or a first-year graduate student in good standing for the semester during which the student intends to use this award, but need not be registered during the summer. Graduate program deficiencies are acceptable if progress toward completion is being made.
- Recipient must be working on a project that uses GIS as part of their thesis or research.
- Recipient may come from any discipline.
- Project must have reasonable chance of completion in 1.5 years or less (for graduate students).
- Strength of GIS component of thesis or research is more important than financial need. Financial need may be used as secondary criterion.
- Recipient may not have received this award previously.

They must be received NO LATER than 31 March, 2008.
- Selection Process. Recipients will be recommended by the Scholarship Committee to the MAGIP Board. The Scholarship Committee shall consist of:
- One member of the MAGIP Education Committee.
- One member of the MAGIP Board selected by the MAGIP President.
- One College or University-affiliated MAGIP member appointed by the MAGIP President.
- Payment. Upon final decision by the selection committee and approval by the MAGIP Board, the MAGIP Board President will write a letter to the scholarship recipient that indicates the individual has been selected and invite the recipient to present the results of their work at the Intermountain GIS Users' Conference the following spring. MAGIP will waive the recipient's cost of registration at that conference. To receive the scholarship payment, the University/College sponsor must provide two copies of a letter to the MAGIP Board with reference to the "Higher Education GIS Scholarship Fund", and include the following information:
- Student's name and Social Security number
- Name of the institution
- Semester during which student will use the award (summer, fall or spring)
- Contact information regarding where the funds are to be deposited towards the student's expenses at the College/University.
The scholarship shall be awarded each April for the following summer, fall and/or spring semester. The award shall be paid directly to the university or college that the scholarship recipient is attending. The scholarship may be applied to tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Any excess remaining after such application may be applied to room and board on or off campus.
