After looking at the proposed sessions for the 2015 FOSS4G North America conference I am very interested in learning more about the capabilities of open source GIS technology.  I am hoping to get some info from the MAGIP community on their personal experience with Open Source GIS (both desktop and online applications).  More specifically should local governments consider transitioning towards this growing trend of open source (instead of ESRI).  Also, is this an opportunity to have more county/city governments that do not have GIS to incorporate it into their work.  Thanks.

    Hi Henry,

I think this would be a great discussion for the Local Government SIG.

Currenlty, does each County/City have to purchase their own Esri license?

I ran across this online Intro to QGIS 1-Day Workshop that you might be interested in: http://www.northrivergeographic.com/introduction-to-quantum-gis

    Thanks for the link Meghan.

I've done a little digging in the recent past on some of the features of open source GIS applications.  Below are some helpful links about open source GIS, (these are what prompted me to start this thread).  Boundless has a complete stack for not only basic map editing but for a full fledged integrated online package.  Built upon using only open source technology.  I am not sure of what the licensing entails but it would be interesting to investigate further.

Henry (& other interested MAGIP members),

I am going to the full FOSS 4G NA conference next month in San Fransisco because I am very interested in transitioning to open source GIS software, especially PostGIS.  I am not in local government, I am an independent small business.

I am planning on being at the MAGIP event in Miles City in May, and can share what I learn as FOSS 4G.

    Thanks.
