I have a lake layer consisting of lakes over 20 acres.  I need to take off the lakes that are Not on private property, and keep the ones that are, and update a map that i have created. Is there an easy way to do this?

    Thanks

There are a few ways to do this but the easiest is to add both your parcels and lakes layer to the map...then select by attribute where your parcels 'OWNCODE >= 20000'...with those parcels selected, use the 'Select By Attribute' to select all lakes that are completely within the selected parcels....export the selected lakes and you're done.

Correction....for the second selection use the 'Select By Location' tool.

    Hey Deb,

If you download the Lincoln county cadastral database from:
    ftp://ftp.gis.mt.gov/CadastralFramework/Lincoln/
you can use the OwnerClassification feature class to select the private lands then do a select by location (intersect, completely contain... whatever meets your criteria) and select the lakes you want that way. Then create a new layer file from that selection (this won't create a new dataset but just point to the original data based on the selection above) or export to a new dataset.

If you have questions, feel free to email me or give me a call
