Viewing 2009 NAIP web service with ArcGIS 9.2

It is a known issue that ArcGIS v9.2 can't consume an ArcGIS Image Service (because the "Image Service" web service type wasn't introduced until 9.3). However, I just discovered that 9.2 users can consume the 2009 NAIP imagery web service using the WMS version of the service.

To create a connection to the WMS service, double-click Add WMS Server in ArcCatalog. Paste the following URL into the URL box:
    http://gisservice.mt.gov/arcgis/services/MSDI_Framework/NAIP_2009/ImageServer/WMSServer
Click Get Layers, then click OK (you should not need a user or password).

The WMS service has a default coordinate system of WGS 1984 but this can be changed to NAD83 Montana State Plane (meters) after it has been added to ArcMap. To do this, right-click on MSDI_Framework_NAIP_2009 in the ArcMap Table of Contents, select Change Coordinate System..., then select NAD_1983_MontanaStatePlane_FIPS_2500.
